Joshua Unikel works at the intersection of design and creative writing, focusing on the overlap between graphic design and the literary essay.
He has shown at Sofia Art Week 2019 (Bulgaria); CICA Museum (S Korea); Griffith University Art Gallery (Australia); Aether Gallery (Bulgaria); The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit; DesignPhiladelphia; the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts; the Oklahoma State Museum of Art; Lawndale Art Center and will be showing at the Institute of Contemporary Art at MECA. His work has appeared in Western Humanities Review, Tupelo Quarterly, The Journal, TriQuarterly, Essay Review, Fugue, PANK, The Normal School, Essay Daily, The Collagist, Sonora Review and other national journals. Unikel is the co-editor of No-Quo Attempts (DesignInquiry Press, 2016) as well as Beyond Category (Hobart and William Smith Colleges Press, 2014). He also serves as a contributing editor of Seneca Review. He has lectured on graphic design and the literary essay at Oberlin College, The University of Oregon, Michigan State University, Stony Brook Manhattan, Carnegie Mellon University, The Open Book Workshop, AIGA Design Educators Conference, AWP and NonfictioNow. He has an MFA in studio art from SUNY Buffalo's Department of Art and an MFA in creative writing from The University of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program.
Unikel is an assistant professor in the University of Houston’s School of Art.
